Website design and build for small businesses

Best-practice website design for small business websites.

Designing an SME website is very different from your average design project. It requires a wide skill set and is a real team effort.

Website design is fluid and should be conversion-optimised. It’s outside the realm of print-based design and needs to take in considerations such as:

  • User experience (UX and UI)
  • Technical optimisation
  • Conversion rate optimisation (CRO)
  • SEO considerations
  • Google’s page speed tests
  • Animations
  • Micro-interactions
  • Colour theory
  • Content strategy
  • Performance optimisation
  • Server load and speed optimisation
  • Information Architecture

These considerations require a team experienced in all aspects of small business website optimisation – to a single designer, a website design project can be simply the ‘look and feel’ when, in reality, it is so much more than that.

The small business website design process.

Considering the above, there is more to a website design project than you might think.

Designing a website for a small business starts with planning the website, not with creating slick visuals.

Something we always say to small business clients is to write what they need the website to say before we start designing what it will look like.

Content should lead the design, not vice versa, so our process often looks something like this:

  1. What does the website need to achieve (business goals)
  2. Target audience
  3. Market trends
  4. Content strategy
  5. What keywords should the site rank for (SEO strategy)
  6. What is the structure of the site (SEO strategy)
  7. What types of content need to go on each page (SEO strategy)
  8. How competitive is your niche in the SERPs (search engine results pages)
  9. Content planning (structure and information architecture)
  10. Wireframes
  11. Look/feel design concepts (UX and CRO considerations)
  12. Key page design layouts (UX and CRO considerations)
  13. Block design (reusable content blocks)
  14. And more…

Note that the ‘design’ work does not start until point 11 above.

If you approach design alone as the solution, you will end up with a site that looks great but does nothing.

Note that we do have in-house copywriters at Toast, and we can help you with the copy for your small business website – getting this right is crucial.

Designing for the CMS (content management system).

Don’t get caught out on this one – make sure your design is bespoke, not some off-the-shelf thing that’s coloured-in.

Unfortunately, some website designers don’t always tell you what they are doing.

With popular CMSs like WordPress or Shopify, you can buy ready-made ‘designs’ for less than a hundred bucks and swap out the logo, fonts and colour scheme.

You may think you are getting a bespoke design, but in reality, you are getting a generic website design that 1000s of other companies use.

Small business websites mustn’t be built on the same clunky code as 1000s of other SME websites as Google can see these as clones – to really get your SME website surfacing in the search, a completely bespoke approach will set you apart from your competition.

This happens when ‘designers’ get used to using a specific theme, and all their website designs are designed to work with the theme they use rather than creating a design that works for your brand.

At Toast, we decouple the design and build process. The design team creates what you need, and the dev team builds it.

Managing the content.

As a small business owner, the last thing you need is to constantly incur costs to manage your own website.

We use WordPress to build all the SME sites we create, which means you have control over everything—from the logo in the header to the menus in the website footer.

This means that once the site is built, you can manage all the content yourself, quickly making edits and updates to your site without incurring development fees.

This approach is crucial for SMEs as websites need to be flexible and cost-effective to maintain.

Hosting the site.

Most SMEs don’t want the added hassle of managing a hosting account, so we take care of all that too.

We host our websites on Google Datacenters in London, and they are backed-up nightly with SSL certificates included in the fees.

As we manage the hosting for you, any issues that may arise are dealt with quickly by our in-house team.

Site Functionality.

What your site does is equally as important as what it looks like.

What functions do our sites ship with?

All our sites ship with all the standard WordPress functions. We also use a few plugins, such as the Gravity Forms plugin, to improve functionality.

We use the standard WP menu system, so you can manage all your menus yourself. We also have a Global Settings page where you can manage your contact details, logos, social media links, and so on.

We also installed the free Yoast plugin as standard and configured the global settings for this as part of the project.

Our sites ship with around 20 default content blocks, all styled to your bespoke design and ready to use for building our pages.

These blocks are built using the ACF Pro plugin, so you can access and edit them.

These pre-built and optimised blocks are perfect for everyday content requirements such as column layouts, text and images, post loops, calls to action, galleries, video embeds, etc.

Our base functionality includes everything you need to start building your site content so you can grow your market and improve your rankings.

Can we add more complex functions?

As our sites are all custom builds, we can make them do anything you need; the only limitation is often the initial budget.

We encourage our clients to view their websites in phases:

Phase one: MVP (minimum viable product).

If you are starting out, this is exactly what you need: a bespoke, optimised website ready for your initial content so you can start building your domain authority and traffic.

Phase one usually includes all the basic functions you will need to get started with content marketing and promoting your site.

Phase two: Additional development.

There is little point in investing in complex functionality unless there is a proven requirement for it, so we encourage clients to add additional functions whether the budget allows it or users demand it.

As our sites are bespoke, they can grow with your business; there will be no need to redevelop the entire site as you need more complex functions – we simply add them to the current site.

We believe small businesses deserve better websites.

Even the best ideas can be let down by a cheap, poorly built and planned website, so we create custom, optimised sites to give your business the best foundations for growth.

Frequently asked questions.

Below are some answers to common questions about website design.

How much does SME web design cost?

We have a fixed-price package for SMEs and smaller sites – see below for details.

How long does it take to design a SME website?

As per the previous point, the larger the project, the more time it takes. Design time can be reduced if you have existing collateral or a set of brand guidelines.

Are the designs mobile-friendly?

100%. All the sites we design are optimised for mobile devices and work perfectly across desktops, tablets and phones.

Do you redesign small business websites?

Yes, if you have a current site that needs a refresh, we can redesign and improve it using your existing content.

Do you offer UX services for smaller businesses?

Our design team is experienced in best-practice website design, which includes UX and CRO.

Do you do SEO?

Yes – your site will be fully optimised before it goes live, but it you want additional monthly SEO help, we can provide that too.

Can you provide hosting?

We can host the site for you, or you can set up your own hosting account and once complete, we’ll move the site there.

Is my site mine once it’s done?

Once you have paid your invoice, the site is 100% yours. We retain no ownership of the code, so you are not tied-in to us for anything moving forward.

Do you only do SME sites?

We do all kinds of websites for large and small clients. We belive that just because you are a small business, it doesn’t mean you should have a cheap, poorly built site.

Are you local?

We’re based locally in Oxfordshire and work with clients across the UK. We do all our work in-house; nothing is outsourced or done off-shore.

I have a site on a different CMS, can you move it to WordPress?

We do this all the time! We can move you site and redesign it, or move it and recreate the current design – whichever you prefer.

Do you provide ongoing support?

Yes, we have a range of support and SEO packages, starting from £40 per month. These can be used for anything on the site.

Do we do WooCommerce?

Certainly, but WooCommerce can get complicated, so there is an additional charge based on what you need it to do.

We can bolt-on Woo at any time to one of our existing sites if you are planning to grow your audience before you sell.

It’s best to discuss this; call us on 01295 266644.

Are there ongoing update costs?

If you host with us or are on a support plan, you can use our plugin licences for free. There are no update costs to our theme or WordPress updates, as you can do these yourself.

We don’t add things to our sites that result in expensive running costs.

If I want to take my WordPress site in-house, can I do that?

Yes, our sites are built using core WordPress code and plugins, which means that any experienced WordPress developer can understand the site we’ve built and develop it further.

As WordPress is open source, we work with this ethos, keeping our sites accessible and easy to develop.

Here are some examples of sites we’ve designed and built.

We’ve created 100s of small business and smaller-budget sites for a wide range of clients.
